Plants and animals
Animals- red kangarooKangaroos are Australia's trademark animal and are also the largest marsupials in the world. It's scientific name is macropus rufus.
Red Kangaroos are primarily herbivores eating green grass as their main meal. Grasses can make up 70%-95% of a Kangaroo's daily diet. This particular species of kangaroo is the largest of it's kind and can grow up to 5.25 feet long from it's head to it's rump. The Red Kangaroo is crepuscular which means it is mainly active at dawn and dusk. This is to mainly avoid predators. A kangaroo's signature hop is actually a cost efficient way to travel at high speeds. As it hops, it's lungs fill and empty automatically because of the way it's diaphragm moves. While it hops, it's tail sticks out to keep it's balance. |
Plants-Desert sturt pea |
The Desert Sturt Pea, or Swainsona Formosa, is an Australian Desert wildflower that is named after the famous botanist Issac Swainson. It's flowers almost make it unrecognizable to be a part of the pea family.
It is well adapted to the desert as it's small seeds require little care and can still germinate after many years. It has a hard coat to protect itself from the harsh desert environment. When grown, it quickly establishes a taproot which is the basis for the other roots to grow. This essential for survival in the desert. |
